I don't understand, isn't "tu na AAYA" for a guy? Shouldn't it be 'AAYI',
if he is referring to a girl not coming? It's not that big of a deal, but
it bothers me...

naAlavi on Thursday, January 01, 2009
no Tu naa AAya iz rite... n da song iz beautiful.. Kumar Sanu iz amazin.. u
guyz shld listen to "Ai Kash Key Hum" frm Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa..

pagfloyd on Saturday, January 10, 2009
tere dar pe SANAM chale aaye... "tu na AAYA" refers to SANAM which could be
used for both male/female but for describing it masculine gender is used. i
hope it doesn't bother you now, abcd ;)

in2ennui on Saturday, January 17, 2009
Firstly, thank you for your effort in trying to explain. But, I am afraid
it still does get at me...I would prefer AAYI... I HAD already thought
about the AAYA referring to SANAM, and I really don't think that is a
common way to speak...to my ears it sounds as though he were lamenting a
man's absence... It is okay though, I will just listen to the female
version! And actually, I am INDIAN born...so bah;)

pagfloyd on Saturday, January 17, 2009
let me try again. contrary to what you say, sanam is used this way a lot
and has been used in a lot of songs. a good example would be this song
(/watch?v=GIMP-dCir4Q) from 'sangam' where according to you raj kapoor
should have sung 'o meri sanam' while he sings 'o mere sanam'. sanam is a
neutral gender but generally referred using masculine gender in the
pronoun. i really don't want you to stop listening to the male version of
the song :)

in2ennui on Saturday, January 17, 2009
Okay: 'MERA', 'MERI', and 'MERE' can be used like 'AAYA' 'AAYI', and
'AAYE'. Try inputting the equivalent of 'AAYA' here, which is 'MERA'. 'o
MERA sanam'? Does not sound right does it? NO! That sounds like a man
sanam. 'MERE' IS gender neutral. 'AAYA' is not, and neither is 'MERA'. If
'AAYE' had been used in 'Tere dar par sanam' that would have sounded fine
to me too!! "Tum na AAYE to hum, chale aaye..." Fine to my ears... "Tu na
AAYA..." NOT so fine...

pagfloyd on Saturday, January 17, 2009
well put. i would say it depends on the context. even 'mera' could be used
as gender neutral e.g. mera sanam aa gaya (here if you use 'mere sanam aa
gaye' - it would sound for male). another such word is 'piya'. anyway, 'tu
na aayi...' would also have been perfectly fine. it was nice discussing
this with you.

In various Indian traditions, such as devotional songs, the singer often
sings from the point of view of a female and refers to the subject (often
God/s) as a male. This is supposed to be reflective of submission to God/s.
I suppose some poets/singers use the idea for love songs too. However in
this case, 'Mera' refers to the noun 'Sanam', which is always masculine, no
matter the gender of the actual sanam in question :)

in2ennui on Monday, July 20, 2009
However, I am referring to the part where the singer says, "Tu na AAYA to
hum chale aaye..." I am not referring to MERA at all! And I presume that
you are speculating about the religious thing? This is the first romantic
song where I have seen them use a masculine form. I still think that the
singers were just lazy and did not change the original song which was sung
by a woman...aayi/aaye would have sounded better! But thank you for your
input:)
