Not a believer within the mosque's eye,
Nor bound by rites of blasphemy’s tie,
Nor pure nor defiled, beneath any sky.

Within Vedas and scriptures, I’m not found,
Nor dwell in the haze of hashish, around,
Nor lost in a drunken, chaotic ground.

I embrace neither joy nor the shadowed gloom,
Nor stained by pollution, nor sealed in a tomb.
I am neither water, nor earthy fume,
Neither fire's embrace, nor the wind's soft plume.

From the first to the last, I know only You,
No other I seek, no other I view,
Beyond sweet and clever, in all I pursue.
